Do you want to start a whole school/organisation approach to mental health?

Schools and education settings are a key source of support for children and young people’s mental health. These environments can provide supportive relationships, safe places and opportunities for children to learn how to talk about their feelings and to cope with life’s challenges.

Let children know that it’s OK not to be OK

Just like our physical fitness, we need to look after our mental health to feel good. When you’re not feeling OK, it’s OK to talk about this and ask for help. Visit our pages to get advice and support for any issues the child is having. If you need help too, make sure you also ask for help. You can also access support from your local education support services.

10 tips for teaching and support staff

  1. Learn about mental health and wellbeing. Check out our website for information and advice on common issues and how to help.
  2. Let pupils know you’re happy to talk about how they’re feeling
  3. Help children and young people learn how to manage their emotions
  4. Get children and young people talking about mental health
  5. Be alert to signs that a child or young person may be in distress
  6. Feel confident about having a conversation with a pupil you’re worried about
  7. Know what to do if you’re concerned about a child or young person. Check out our Get Help pages for information.
  8. Be patient with children and young people who are least engaged in school
  9. Support children and young people who are more likely to be suspended or excluded
  10. Be kind to yourself and look after your own mental health.

 

Looking after your own mental health

  • Just like our physical fitness, we need to look after our mental health to feel good. When you’re not feeling OK, it’s ok to talk about this and ask for help.
  • Connect with other people – Spend time with your friends and family, don’t rely only on social media and texting to keep in touch.
  • Get active – Do regular physical activity. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym, unless you want to. Find a physical activity you enjoy doing and make it part of your daily life.
  • Learn new skills – Find something new to do and learn how to do it. Find something you enjoy that also challenges you.
  • Be kind – Find a way to help other people. This doesn’t have to be a really big thing and sometimes the small things can really make a difference. Take time to check in with a friend and ask them how they are, say thank you to someone who has helped you, get involved in volunteering in your local community.
  • Pay attention – Notice what is going on for you now, in the present moment. People often call this Mindfulness
